Post-its in Firefox Sidebar

Tip of the Week: Managing Post-It Notes

Grabbing a Post-it note to quickly scribble down information from a Web page can lead to sticky-note buildup on the monitor. If you would like to jot those notes right in the browser while you work, there's a new Firefox plug-in called List.it (short for the Latitudinal Information Scrap Trapper that Indexes Things) that does just that.

Once installed and configured, List.it creates a sidebar panel in the Firefox window with a box to type or paste in notes and other bits of information. Developed by researchers at M.I.T., List.it can be downloaded at groups.csail.mit.edu/haystack/listit/. Notes can also be synchronized with other copies of Firefox with the List.it add-on, which is a lot easier than shuttling paper sticky notes between work and home.

Making iPhones work with multiple computers

Iphones, unlike iPods, can't seem to hook up with multiple computers, even with "manage music manually" turned on. Here are instructions for how to do it:

Copying and pasting Mac OS X path names

Working in a collaborative environment, one often has to let a colleague know where a file can be found. I knew how to do it in Windows, but it was tougher on the Mac. I found a free script that adds an item to the "more" section of context sensitive (right mouse click) menus that does exactly this.

Hierarchical labels (nested folder-like) in Gmail

One of Gmail's big limitations to me was that it lacked nested folders for emails. Labels substitute for folders, but you can't nest them.

I just found a site that allows you to add this capability. It was a snap to do in Firefox (two clicks).
